Mexico-based design studio MANUFACTURA has reportedly developed an innovative method of transforming organic waste into building materials with their Eggshell Project (Un Proyecto de Huevo). The project takes a sustainable approach to ceramics, using 3D printing to create bioceramics from used eggshells and combining them with sustainable aggregates using a KUKA KR-150 robotic arm. This process results in building blocks of various geometries, which can be used for multiple architectural applications.

The Eggshell Project aims to address two key issues: the environmental impact of the ceramics industry and the high level of food and organic waste in Mexico. By using a locally sourced, widely available, and lightweight waste product – eggshells – the design team at MANUFACTURA managed to minimize the negative environmental impact of the ceramics industry. Combined with bio-binders, the mixture solidifies without the need for firing, and is further enhanced by a 3D printing process using a robotic arm. The team highlights the benefits of their approach, including less waste production, geometrical freedom, precision, and repeatability.

MANUFACTURA’s research focused on creating construction materials, specifically the Eggshell Bricks Wall, composed of 105 different blocks assembled based on their geometry, and the Eggshell Column, made of 26 pieces that interlock to create stability through their shape. These bricks are created through a 100% sustainable and circular process, utilizing raw materials obtained from the waste donated by various restaurants in Mexico City over a two-month production period.

The success of the project was attributed to the combination of computational design, digital manufacturing, technology, and materials innovation. MANUFACTURA aims to challenge traditional manufacturing methods and create circular systems for production and living while generating new employment opportunities. The Eggshell Project demonstrates the potential for creating new opportunities through recycling, sanitization, manufacturing, and site construction methods.
