World Environment Day (June 5), launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is themed "Land Restoration, Combating Drought and Desertification," calling on nations globally to join forces in restoring land, combating desertification, enhancing drought resilience, slowing climate change, protecting nature, and improving livelihoods and food security for billions of people worldwide.
According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet's land area is degraded, directly affecting half of the world's population and threatening about half of the global GDP ($44 trillion USD). The frequency and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000, and without urgent action, droughts could affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.
Land restoration is one of the main goals of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). Through policies, initiatives, and global and regional cooperation mechanisms, this goal aims to protect and revive ecosystems worldwide to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
